We are looking north towards Yarm Bridge, with Stockton beyond. The Green Tree Inn on the right is a reminder of the remarkable number of public houses in Yarm; several of these were busy coaching inns with stabling to the rear for horses in the era of the stagecoaches between 1700 and 1840.

On Friday two days before the Second World War broke out on the 3rd of September 1939 I was evacuated to Yarm. I was six years old and along with my sister Doreen and cousin Audrey we, with nearly all of the pupils at our school, (Alexandra Road in Gateshead) walked down to Bensham station and boarded a special train to Yarm.
