Caption for York, Bishopthorpe Palace Gardens 1893: Originally the village was known as Thorpe St Andrew; the name was changed to Bishopthorpe because of the archbishop's palace being built here. One can imagine the bishops using these peaceful gardens for prayer and meditation.
