More about this scene
Frith's photographer was looking east, past the Town Hall on the right, towards St Nicholas's Church and the abbey gateway. On the left are buildings with 18th- century facades, some re- fronting much older timber- framed buildings. These are classic examples of market place infill, where traders' stalls become permanent buildings. The older fabric is more obvious from their backs, which can be seen in Stert Street beyond.
