Ashburton lies in the valley of the River Ashburn, which joins the Dart at Buckfastleigh. In 1258 it was declared a Stannary Town by Edward I, a status which allowed it a measure of autonomy, with important decisions being made by the Stannary Parliament at Crockern Tor.
