More about this scene
During the 1950s the site of Barlborough Colliery was cleared, but in 1955 there was an attempt by the NCB to re- open Southgate Colliery in Clowne. Southgate had been abandoned in 1929 after severe flooding from the already defunct Oxcroft Colliery. The NCB wanted to use Southgate to connect with the High Hazel seams at Creswell, but after several years of expensive tunnelling the project was cancelled and the site cleared.
