The parish church of St James is thought to date back to the reign of either Henry II or Richard I, though it was heavily rebuilt about a hundred years after its original construction. In the 1890s rebuilding involved the demolition of the south side of the nave so that a south aisle could be added. Other work at this time included a complete refit of the interior and a new organ.
