More about this scene
The Town Hall, on the west side of St Paul's Square, started life as a school, a school originally founded by Sir William Harpur (a key name in Bedford's history) in 1566. The left-hand part was the school, rebuilt in 1756 with a statue of Harpur in a niche. The porch with the turret and the parts to its right were added in 1860 by a local architect, James Horsford, and is now the Bedford Civic Theatre. Behind is now the 1960s council offices, a seven-storey block.
