The significance of Town Bridge is that of an enduring physical presence. In one form or another is has stood on the site for centuries; it carries the main road from the south; it is a symbol of the involvement by the town's citizens with their river. Murkett Brothers car showrooms on the opposite bank in the 1955 picture indicate an unlikely egalitarianism in the juxtaposition of window signs for both Rolls Royce and a caravan agency. By the 1960s the scene had lightened thanks to a coat of paint on the buildings and street furniture, although this photograph was possibly taken early in the year and before the pleasure boat concession had opened for business.
