Better Than A Knickerbocker Glory

A Memory of Bexleyheath.

Following a week at school the weekend was always eagerly anticipated, especially Saturdays. On this day I would take the long walk from home at the north end of Gipsy Road and make my way via Pickford Road to the west end of Bexleyheath Broadway. Once on the main street I first made a visit to the library in its unique wooden building, then moved up the Broadway to the pet shop on the left for my pet rabbit items before making my way to The Silver Lounge, the splendid Art Decco ice-cream parlour best known for its iconic Knickerbocker Glories. Delicious as they were, for me there was something much much better, a cricket ball size scoop of vanilla or strawberry ice-cream served on a large scone dipped in delicious melted milk chocolate like a ganash that transformed it into a giant choc ice. These were served from a window at the front of the premises open to shoppers passing by on the street. It was an indulgence I never grew tired of.
