More about this scene

This photograph captures the changes that were going on in Blackburn at the time. There were many Lancashire towns going through the same revitalisation, but in the frenzy of change many of the grand Victorian buildings were lost. The buses were mostly corporation ones, and services were reliable. There was little sign of the chaos to come on the deregulation of public transport. Blackburn had started to expand with the canal age. Then, in 1797, its first turnpike, to Bolton, opened. In 1770 there were 5,000 people living in the town, and by 1811 there were 15,083, three times that number; by 1835 the population had doubled again. The railway to Preston opened in 1846, but the station we see here did not open until 12 September 1886.

Sarah was born in Belfast in 1937 and they married in Blackpool in December 1958. They emigrated to the USA in 1961. I am hoping that any ...see more

I was there till I did ...see more
