A Memory of Blackhall Colliery.
lackhall colliery in the 1940s and 50s i was lucky to be brought up there proud loyal hard working people so different from life today.born 1940 lived in 11th street and was encased in love and safetymy father was a shaft man at the colliery(Billy) and my uncle Bob (jogger) was a goalie in local football . my mam when she was younger worked in post office and was house keeper for the owners the Kays i was lucky my parents made sure i never had to go down the pit. soon as i could i got a driving licence and had lots of driving jobs eventualy after 6 years as a United bus driver i drove for Bee Line coaches where i bribed the boss and became Hartlepool F C driver for 2 seasons.when the great Mr. B Clough was manager. Then i started to be self employed and worked as a market trader and car dealer with the support of the love of my life Christine. we had 37 wonderfull years together now i live alone near Darlington but it,s not the same as being in Blackhall would i like to go back? last time about 5 year ago i visited the old home town didn,t see 1 person i recognised shops all dirrent . so no i think i will just keep my memories. apart from not having my Christine i have a good life with the love and support of my family.but i will allways be a Blackhall lad. at heart.
