Willink School 1961 1965

A Memory of Burghfield Common.

We had a great sporting record at Willink School - Mr Thomas was the games teacher, and I remember the brilliant rugby team the school had with Donald Blundy playing for England U 19 rugby team at 15 years of age.

I also remember Alan Berry who was a brilliant runner and ran in the All England Cross Country Championships one year, he also ran in the 4 x 100 yds relay team at Palmer Park. The 4 runners were Marcuas Fisher, Bill Wigmore, Alan Berry and Eddie Smith - what a memorable race that was.

I often wonder particuarly about Alan Berry, my local school hero who went on to be a fireman, I think. Also the long cold winter of 1963 when we could not play rugby for about 3 months and had to do 5 mile cross country runs during the games period. My favourite teacher at the school was Donald Moffat who was a lovely man who produced the wonderful play The Man Lives the story of the life of Jesus, Philip Buckman took the leading role.

Just a few memories of Willink School
Kind regards

Michael Robinson
