More about this scene
The Earl of Derby both gave the land and also paid for the construction of the market, which opened in 1841. In those days it was open to the elements; in 1867 it was decided that it should be covered over with an iron and glass roof. The alterations were designed by a Mr Green, who was the Earl's architect at Redvales. The market re-opened in April 1868; the alterations cost about £5000.
