If coal was burned in these houses, it had to be imported from the mainland. There have been a number of attempts to find coal on Man, with much of the exploration work concentrated on the northern part of the island. In 1985-86 Rio Tinto Zinc carried out borings near Peel, Derby Haven and Ballasalla.
