More about this scene

Churchtown can trace its recorded history back to the Viking landings, but it is also true that the settlement will have been in existence before the outcasts from Ireland made their way ashore. Development was slow and gradual as the inhabitants dragged a poor existence from the sea and the land. They lived in a cluster of mud-daubed cottages built of wreck timber close to the walls of the church - hence Church Town. It should be appreciated that the sea was considerably closer than the modern shoreline, so that in the Middle Ages sea fishing became the all-important industry in the area.

A Selection of Memories from Churchtown

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Churchtown

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

We moved to Churchtown in '61 from the North East. Attended the junior school attached to St Cuthbert's church. Remember the area very well, Botanical Gardens especially. Used to go fishing there even though it was prohibited [which boys didn't!]. Left in 1970. Fond memories
I run this place now and we are about to re-furbish. Great memories of fantastic guests, team and just a great pub with a new story to tell every day!
