More about this scene

One famous painter, L S Lowry, visited Clitheroe many times. His paintings of the town show a great interest in its rooftops, which are well illustrated in this photograph. Rooftops echo the different periods of building. One rooftop of 1860 shows the Royal Insignia; it was the Court House, Lowergate (just out of this photograph). The free burgesses of the town held privileges expressed in 13 charters drawn up over 11 centuries.

I remember this pool vividly! One day I was riding my tricyle round the outside of the pool, which wasn't filled with water at the time. Unfortunately I happened to fall in and I cut my hand on a broken glass. After 34 years I still have a scar to prove it.
