More about this scene
Mill Lane is off Church Lane and leads, not unsurprisingly, to the old water mill. In this view the sandstone and brick- dressed mill house is seen across the header pond that stored the water needed to power the waterwheel. The mill ceased working some years ago, and the pond was filled in. The stream flows in the foreground, and the Mill House is concealed behind hedges. The mill buildings on the right have been converted to a house, Mill Cottage. The wagon shed has gone. Francis Frith's Sussex A Century Ago
