The village takes its name from the area's most famous son, Sir Walter Raleigh, who was born at the beautiful Tudor farmhouse of Hayes Barton a couple of miles to the south. The 15th-century tower is all that remains of the original structure of the church of St John the Baptist - the rest was rebuilt in 1875.

It was 20th April when I married Joscelyn Hellier, who lived in Pear Tree Cottage. We were married by Rev. Reginald Kaye in St John the Baptist Church at Colaton Raleigh. It was a windy Saturday but it did nothing to spoil the joy of the event.
