The castle had been used as a prison since the 13th century, and prisoners included Protestant martyrs under Mary Tudor, and Catholics under Elizabeth I. In private hands, it was leased be Charles Gray as the county jail in 1734, closing in 1835 following years of complaint about its revolting conditions.
