Memories Of Woolworths
A Memory of Colindale.
When I was 14 and a half, I took an evening and Saturday morning job at the Woolworths in Varley Parade. I was still there five years later, when my A levels came to an end. I still see supervisor Dot from time to time, still living in the flat above the old shop. Back then there were many Woolworths that started to disappear, long before the 2009 collapse. There was one in Hendon, up the Watford Way, one in West Hendon. The Colindale one became the Moon Under Water pub some time in the 1990s.
I often wonder what became of Chris who worked there in 1977. He introduced me to some good music - we used to play some music while doing the evening sweep up - that became a choreographed event, I did it so many times. I also did many other jobs there, like breaking down boxes, and filling shelves. Once I had to take a (heavy!) lawnmower to the Kingsbury store - by hand!
I can remember the manager there, Mr Drane - hope he's still alive - last time I saw him was in a Woolies store near Victoria, a huge place.
Colindale has changed quite a bit, but it still looks much the same as the old photos. It's much more built up now, many more people live there.
