Nostalgic memories of Colindale's local history

Share your own memories of Colindale and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I'm trying to find out the history of 'Bronllwyn', Tyn y Wern Villas, Trethomas, South Wales and what it was used for in the 1920's. My mother was born and brought up in Bedlinog, Glamorganshire, South Wales but it seems she spent some time in Bronllwyn around Christmas 1928. I know my mother suffered of ill health of some sort but I know very little of her childhood. I'm 82 now and would dearly like to know a little more about my mum. Margo Smith Smith6767@btinternet.com

I was born in December 1939 in Redhill Hospital which then changed to Edgware General. My parents Bill and Gladys Wyness lived in Marlow Court, Colindeep Lane and my maternal grandparents lived in Chalfont Court also in Colindeep Lane. Marlow Court was bombed and we moved to Colin Close. My sister Lyndsay was born at home in 1944 .I slept downstairs in the indoor shelter in case of air raids - this ...see more
I lived in Sunny View (off Wakemans Hill) from 1953 to 1958, when we moved away. Dad worked at Curr Bros Laundry and later at the Vanden Plas works in Kingsbury. It was a very different world in those days.
It's quite some time since I submitted my 'War Times, and a bit more' and having read a few later submissions I thought I might as well add a few more observations. Many have suggested that for those who moved away many years ago might be disappointed should they make a return visit as much has changed. I haven't been back but using google maps I can see that there are many differences. I was too young to have ...see more
I was born at 102 Lynton Ave in 1935 and we later moved opposite to 9 Colin Court.  I  have not seen any memories from my era (except Peter Woolford & Martyn Leonard).  I remember Kenny & Maureen Houland living at about No. 85 and Ralph Owers at perhaps 87, Ann & Sally Wright at 96, Donald Moss at 3 Colin Court and Sonia Thompson at No. 1.  I still have my Colindale Primary School Report signed by Mr. ...see more
My birth certificate says I was born at Bushey Hospital in the April of 1943. I’m told that it was during an unusually hot spell. I lived at 84, Lynton Avenue in Colindale up to 1965 when I got married and moved away. There was a time between 1960 and 1962 when my job with the Met. Office took me to Dunstable and then Bracknell, but I returned home between each block of duties. As a child I played on the ...see more
