More about this scene

This view of Cottesmore is typical of Rutland's visual feast of limestone and ironstone villages, set in a rolling, spired landscape of hedges and walls which the hunt can, in the main, take in its stride. Rutland is a tiny county, which seems, apart from blips such as the cement works at Ketton, never to have moved into any industrial age, or even into an age of mass communication.

Raf Cottesmore Wwii
My father, Joseph Spielmann, served with the US Army Air Force attached to the Signal Corps during WWII. He often spoke fondly of his time in Cottesmore. His unit was housed in a manor house which belonged to the widow of an RAF officer who was shot down over France. She opened up her residence to the American troops and they were there until an outbreak of measles at which time they were moved to another ...see more

Cottesmore 1969
My name was Liz Shepherd and we were new arrivals. I remember Dick Broom in the village shop that sold everything from Brussell sprouts to Royal Doulton and was also the Post Office. The butcher would leave his straw hat hanging outside his shop when he wasn't there so you didn't waste time walking up the yard. The amazement when one of the thatched cottages on the main street I think was sold for £1500. ...see more

Nostalgia
I think the landlord's name was George.  Can't remember his wife's name.  The food was marvellous, the atmosphere and friendliness second to none.  The Vista Golf was installed during 1969

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
