More about this scene

The wide main street of the village of Coxwold has not changed much since the days when Laurence Sterne, the author of Tristram Shandy, was vicar from 1760 until his death in 1768. He gave the title of the book to his house, Shandy Hall, on the western edge of the village. Halfway down the village street on the left we can see the white-painted Fauconberg Arms.
