Heath Clark Grammar School

A Memory of Croydon.

Having recently decided to write my memoirs and having been born in South Croydon in 1947 I have been researching to check my memories are correct. I came upon this great website and have been intrigued to hear others memories of Croydon.

I went to Heath Clark which was a secondary school when I joined in 1957 but for reasons I have never found an explanation for it became a Grammar School I think in 1958/59. The only difference arising from this change appeared to be that we had to study Latin and a new teacher was recruited to teach us this subject. I can`t remember his name but he was very unorthodox and we seemed to spend a great deal of time messing around and learning little.

Everyone in the class received high marks in Latin at end of year tests but our knowledge proved to be illusionary and when tested at O level time I think everyone failed dismally apart from two students who had studied Latin elsewhere before joining Heath Clark.

I would be very interested to hear others recollections of Heath Clark in the 50s and 60s.

Comments & Feedback

I went to Winterbourne Primary and Junior schools in the 1950s and remember that Heath Clark school was somewhere at the back of them. There was an access road to Heath Clark between the two Winterbourne schools, so we knew it was there. But I think the school hours must have been different because I never remember seeing any Heath Clark pupils, and don't even know if they had a uniform. It was always a bit of a mystery to me.
