More about this scene

This view from the top of Whitehall Park looks over the flower beds to Darwen beyond. We can make out quite a few of the mill chimneys, but not the most famous of them all, the square 300ft India Mill chimney. Built of local brick with wide stone viewing balconies, it is modelled on the bell-tower of St Marks Square in Venice, and it took fourteen years to build. The River Darwen (a Celtic name) is only 15 miles long before it joins the Ribble near Preston.
