On the left, above the fourth sunblind, is a plaque informing the passer-by that Thomas Hardy was apprenticed here in 1856. On the adjoining wall is a plaque with the information that William Barnes lived here at about the same time - the older poet influenced the younger. The ladies carry wicker shopping baskets: there is not a plastic carrier bag in sight. The car in the foreground is a Vauxhall.
