More about this scene

Listed by Edward Baines in his Gazetteer with the many villages of Blackburn Hundred, Downham is 3 miles north-east of Clitheroe. The church of St Leonard has a tower of 15th-century origin, but there has been a church on this site since the 13th century. The main part of the church dates from 1910, when some buildings in Downham were rebuilt. A custom was still being observed in 1930 that had run for 250 years: the Assheton sermon was preached by the Rev J A Latham, vicar of Read. This sermon, referred to as the 'Downham preaching', was delivered annually on 30 January. The church faces the Assheton Arms, and since the 17th century the Assheton family has controlled the village from Downham Hall.
