More about this scene
As well as the tower of St James' church, a number of industrial chimney stacks punctuate the town skyline, hinting at Dursley's manufacturing past. Besides cloth making, the town became a centre for the manufacture of agricultural machinery; this was thanks to Robert Ashton Lister, who set up his firm in 1845. His son Percy expanded the business, and began production of the diesel engines that are made to this day. In the 1890s, Lister's chief engineer was a Danish man, Mikael Pedersen, who invented a safety bicycle and the milk churn.
