Green And Silley Weir

A Memory of East Ham.

I worked for Green and Silley Weir in Royal Albert Docks in the mid 1960's. I remember there being a nice bunch of people working there. Every Christmas us girls in the offices used to get a few big boxes of chocolates from the men who worked in the different *shops*.

There were Blacksmiths, Engineers, electricians and various others. I had a couple of dates with one of the apprentices and met another boyfriend, who worked in another office in our building, but for another company. I also remember getting caught by the swing bridge sometimes on the way into work. Was a good excuse if you were running late!!

I wondered if anybody else remembered working there.

Hi, if you were working at RH green & silley weir, its possible that you knew my father Matthew (Mat) Liddell. We lived in folkestone road from 1949-1965 I went to vicarage lane school then to napier road and then the new school Thomas lethaby a brand new school left school at 15 and went to work in the city
My Dad worked there Marine engineer, Jim Conway, remember there sports day at there Wansted sports ground.
I was an apprentice at Green & Siley's from September 1969 until 1973, I can only say that I loved every minute of it. I worked on various ships and in drydock repairs, one of these being the HMS Belfast which was drydocked in King George V.
Happy days.
My maternal grandfather, J R Thorp, my late father, J W Freeman, my sister and I all worked for this company.
Hi, my Dad Carlie Thorp was chief Boilermaker in Blackwall yard he retired 1966 then his brothe rJack Thorp got the job.
My brother Malcolm Thorp was apprentice carpenter for Silley Weir. I remember going into work on saturdays with dad and going down the dry dock, blowing up the ballons at the club in Wanstead for the evening event. The dock gates are still clearly seen from the Thames i went past them last year on a high speed boat trip with my sons Charles and Adam, my brother lives in Wickford and myself in Chelmsford. I done an apprenticeship as a bricklayer from 1972 as the docks had come to an end by then and I now teach construction at a college but will retire christmas 2024 at the age of 67 one of the posts above refer to my uncle Jack posted by Gill Chick
