More about this scene
Ellesmere Port was created when the Earl of Ellesmere constructed a canal from Ellesmere in Shropshire to meet the River Mersey. It was constructed to bring the goods from the potteries to Liverpool for world-wide distribution. The small village of Whitby, where the canal met the river, was renamed Ellesmere Port. Here we see the docks that linked the Ship Canal with the Ellesmere Canal (now called the Shropshire Union Canal), with the tall flour mils in the background.
