Martin's Broadway Stores

A Memory of Farnham Common.

I think we moved to Farnham Common in about 1967, my parents took over the family shops "Martin's Broadway Stores" we lived above the shops to start with, in a flat that was heated with green house paraffin heaters.
was it 1968 that it snowed heavily ?
The back of the shops looked out over what was then an orchard, where we used to play, i can still picture seeing the bulldozers move in, it is now Orchard Close.
my sister an I went to Mrs Redells play group, then on to the Primary School.
the school was just a fab little school, Mr Little was the head master, Mr Roberts was the caretaker [he was a lovely man] i remember all the teachers, our favourite will always be Mr Smith.
i am still friends with many of my primary school friends, 4 of us still meet up a couple of times a year.
in 1970 we moved to big house with a large garden, "Beechwood" on Parsonage Lane. we used to have a pony that we kept in the field opposite.
i remember it as a great village to grow up in.
with Burnham Beeches on the doorstep, there used to be a fair ground and a public open swimming pool.
in 1977 we sold the house and moved to Devon, where we could sail more, in the meantime we had just sunk our yacht up in Scotland, we had effectively been shipwrecked and moved to Devon without the yacht.
the shops were sold a few years later and then demolished to build anew. for a while when i went back to visit i still knew where they had been as the walnut tree that had been in the garden was still there.
all now gone, but the memories are still here :)
i am now Carolyn Selley, I was Carolyn Martin, my sister was Pam, our parents are Ron and Maggie.
i still live in Devon
