More about this scene
Fittleworth is a picturesque village of fine old houses, commons and fir woods. On the left of the picture is the Swan, a 14th-century coaching inn with a sign spanning the main road. Nearby is a fine stone bridge over the River Rother and a picturesque house (a converted watermill) on an island in the river. The Grange is a fine house of c1700. Sir Edward Elgar, the composer, lived at Brinwell's Cottage in 1917. Coates is a crenellated Gothic-style house built c1810; during World War Two it was occupied by explosives enthusiast Colonel Stewart Blacker, who converted the cellars to develop an anti-tank weapon. The scene is still recognisable. The village stores, Harding Brothers, is now a house.
