More about this scene
Founded in 1132, Fountains was given large tracts of land on which to raise sheep. A huge amount of English wool was sold abroad, often by means of forward contracts, which enabled the monks to spend money on ever more grand buildings. At one time Fountains had over 600,000 acres of land given over to wool production, but even so it was often in debt. In 1275 the abbey owed over £6,000 and was bailed out by the Jewish bankers in York.
