Saltwell Park is in the middle of the town, and comprises gardens, a lake, and recreational areas. Saltwell Park Museum is housed in the old mansion. Nearby is the Shipley Art Gallery, named in honour of Joseph Shipley; he not only paid for the gallery, but gave it its private collection of over 500 paintings.

I would love to find someone to talk to about my youth when I lived in Gateshead 127 Morrison st I went to rose st school from 1940/1945 got my first job at huewoods teams valley trading estate till 1950 if I get a reply from anyone I would be over the moon .I hav e so much to talk about but I need a reply.Albert
I attended Victoria Rd school and then redheugh junior school, my Gran Jane Turner lived on Derwentwater road and her family percy, Doreen, Elsie, Jenny and Florrie , my mam all attended lady Vernon school, sadly they are all gone now. I have great memories of playing in Woodsies park, kyle Lane Dairy and of course dead mans arch, great in the snow and in the summer I have ruined many pairs of shoes ...see more
Tony Stafford. I lived in Gateshead from 1954 to 1961. For several years my friends and I attended Shipcote Baths most Saturday mornings, we learned to swim, dive, socialise, etc. Abiding memory is of staying in until, teeth chattering with cold, getting dried and hurrying over the road to a small cafe - where for twopence you could buy a bap filled with hot gravy.
I also learned lifesaving there and took the various badges at swimming classes organised by the Royal Lifesaving Society.
I was born at 50 Milling Street in 1955. I had my Auntie and Uncle living a few doors down. I was one of 6 kids so there were 8 of us crammed into our upstairs flat. The toilet was outside and downstairs in the backyard, while the tin bath hung on the wall outside!! How life has changed for young families today in 2017.
