More about this scene
Apart from the signs and the Pre-War Morris car, little has changed here. The Star Inn still looks out towards the wonderful, elegant stone cross on its seven step base. The tall cross, with its statues in their canopied niches, is the best surviving Eleanor Cross - one of a series erected by the distraught King Edward I wherever his wife Eleanor of Castile's coffin rested overnight on its journey from Nottinghamshire to London in 1290. The other cross in Northamptonshire, at Hardingstone, also survives.
