More about this scene
This scene is virtually unrecognisable to today, but it shows just how busy the four roads of Gloucester were in the 19th century. The delivery men in this picture are prominent. Drinkwater's luggage shop at Number 26 advertises its location on the hoardings. Note the tram lines on the road. All four roads were serviced by trams; in this instance, the line took folk out to the Painswick Road from Eastgate. In 1904 the trams would become electric.
