More about this scene
The original title of this photograph as it appears in the Frith archive is 'Jubilee Hall'. This is most interesting, for the suggestion that the building be called Jubilee Hall in commemoration of Queen Victoria's Jubilee brought applause in 1897, when the council had the opportunity to purchase the land and remove the shop which was an obstruction in the road. However, it was finally named Victoria Hall, and the large building now houses various local societies' functions. The building also houses the tourism office, the police office, and the council offices.
