Castle Street Swimming Baths

A Memory of Guildford.

I was a pupil at St Nicolas Primary School, Portsmouth Road, from 1964-1966. We went swimming at the Castle Street baths every week. I remember thinking even at the age of 10 how run down the street was and how old fashioned the baths were. The smell of chlorine was quite overwhelming as you went in. Frpm what I remember you actually went up a set of stairs from the street to get to the pool, which must have been quite unusual.
The Headteacher was determined all pupils should be able to swim before they left the School. I squeaked in with a width of the baths the week before I was due to leave.
