Christmas Deliveries: If you placed an order on or before midday on Friday 19th December for Christmas delivery it was despatched before the Royal Mail or Parcel Force deadline and therefore should be received in time for Christmas. Orders placed after midday on Friday 19th December will be delivered in the New Year.

West Hendon

A Memory of Hendon.

I was a victim of the Hendon bombing in 1941 aged 5. We used to live York Road with a lot of our uncles and aunts with the name of Long. We were made homeless through the bombing and put into the church hall on the Edgware Road as temporary accommodation, until other housing was found for us. We finished up at 37 Park Road. My sister and I went to Algernon Road School and then to Brent Secondary Modern. If anybody had the same experience, I would like to hear from them.

I also lived in Hendon in Sturgess Ave and went to Algernon School then on to Brent Modern secondary I was born in 1940 and lived in Hendon until 1970.

It was 13th February 1941 when a lone Luftwaffe bomber dropped a SC2500 maximum Heavy Explosive bomb (equivalent to two V2 rockets) on West Hendon. I can remember the occasion well; our cat had good hearing and would want to go out before the sirens sounded; he seemed to pick up the drone of enemy aircraft. Before we could open the door to let him out so the massive explosion was heard, and then the sirens were sounded. Forty houses were destroyed and 80 people died. The hero of the West Hendon bombing was a young boy named Freddie Harrison (a pupil at Bell Lane School); he went back into his bombed house and rescued his baby sister. His photo along with the Mayor of Hendon appeared in the newspapers. A few years ago his 'little sister' contacted me and advised me then that he was living in retirement in Perth, Australia.
