The Joys Of Delvering Groceries!!

A Memory of Hoddesdon.

In the mid 50`s, I delivered groceries on a trade bike to places in Glen Faba, from Noyes shop, in Rye Road, squatters had moved into many places and were customers. They kept Alsatian dogs to keep anyone in authority away, they also scared me stiff, so much so, I asked my father to drive me there. He was fortunate enough, to have a small Austin 8 car, to take me there and take the delivery to the door, he seemed fearless!
Another vivid memory, I have, of delivering groceries, was to the house of the family of the keeper of the sewerage farm, down the bottom of Rye Rd, it later became a toll road. The raw sewerage was channeled directly on to a farm, not sure if anything was grown there or just a fancy name, for a sewerage works.
Washing powers and other cleaning fluids, were coming on the market, instead of bars of washing soap, these caused a lot of foam to blow all over the place. When the sewerage water, hit the ground from the above ground channeling.
I had fun and games, trying to avoid, these big lumps of foam, more like small clouds. Till one day, I had a direct hit, in my face, after that, I wrapped myself up in a scarf and wore a hat, don`t think they ever gave me a penny or two, for my troubles!
