Nostalgic memories of Hoddesdon's local history

Share your own memories of Hoddesdon and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

In the mid 50`s, I delivered groceries on a trade bike to places in Glen Faba, from Noyes shop, in Rye Road, squatters had moved into many places and were customers. They kept Alsatian dogs to keep anyone in authority away, they also scared me stiff, so much so, I asked my father to drive me there. He was fortunate enough, to have a small Austin 8 car, to take me there and take the delivery to the ...see more

Yes I recall this well. The main attraction was that I could put my feet into a special xray machine to see 'the fit' of a shoe. One's toes could be seen wriggling. No doubt v dangerous but a child has no conception of that. So far I have not developed leukaemia which is an added bonus. Didn't Sally Seaton work there (latterly Mrs Brekaflak).
I remember in the late 1950s speaking to a Police Constable in Hertford who made the comment, "If I had a pound for every time I'd kicked Harry Webb's a*** off Hoddesdon clock, I'd be a rich man." It didn't stop him taking part in a trip to see Cliff Richard in concert somewhere in London.
Would like to hear from any of my old classmates. I now live in Bognor Regis. I am always thinking of my first 20 years in Hoddesdon - the war years, the Vi's and V2's, my years at Burford St. School. Hope someone will remember me. Stuart Jenkins

Does anyone remember Meadows Supermarket in The High Street in the 1960s?
A school chum & I came here to see Expresso Bongo, starring local lad Harry Webb, aka Cliff Richard, in about 1961. I was almost 16 but still felt guilty about breaking the law - and afraid of being caught!
I'm on Bess, the pony with the white blaze who is watching the photographer. I' m leaning out of the saddle trying to hide, although we'd agreed to be photographed. We'd met the cameraman by chance and had been surprised to encounter anyone at all. This was the only time I rode Bess - usually I had Rocket, a skewbald whose name was a real misnomer. Dear old Bess ...see more
My father bought our chalet, last one on the left on the road out. My brother and I, 12 and 10 at the time, spent most of our school holidays there, often alone. When I think of the primus stove, pump water and no toilet, I am horrified now, but we had wonderful times over many years. It seemed the sun always used to shine! We would get the bus to Rye House and walk along the towpath, carrying everything we needed. I ...see more
