Nostalgic memories of Hulme's local history

Share your own memories of Hulme and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Hiya. My auntie was Hilda Bowcock married to Uncle Jimmy Flanagan who was the son of Mary Ellen Flanagan who lived at 52 Crown Street, Hulme. That was my grannie "Nellie". I wonder if Hilda was one of the Bowcocks you referred to?
Hiya. I watched Palden's burn down, stood next to my grannie Nellie. We were standing at the corner of Humamby Avenue, near City Road, Hulme, where my family lived. From about a mile away you could see the awful fire rage through the store and I remember the clock melting and falling. I was about 4 then. I was born in 1952 so am wondering if the fire happened around 1956.
My mum lived at No.1 Bonsall Street in Hulme, where I was born in the 1940's. She lived with her parents, Lil and Josh Whelan. Lil had a big extended family with a sister, Sal - also known as Nellie Gardener who used to own a greengrocers in Renshaw street. Both my parents grew up in the area and I have memories of Sal's greengrocers. If anyone knew them, I'd be grateful for contact/information. Mum is very elderly now but often speaks of Bonsall Street.
My mother, Barbara Davidson, was born in Hulme 1927 to Jenny and Harry Davidson, they lived in Junction Street. My mother went to Vine Street primary school and South Hulme Senior girls. The families she remembered are the Metcalfs and the Glovers, her best friend was Dorothy Glover who became a war bride at the age of 18 and went to America. If there are any relatives who would like to contact me, I would love to hear from you.
I was born July 1951, my parents were Dorothy (nee Moore) and Eric Almond, we lived at 156 Warde St. It was my grandparent's house, my grandfather Thomas Almond had died in 1950, so we moved in with Gran Clara (nee Cheetham) Almond. I went to Mulberry St School from 1955 to 1962 then went on to Ducie Technical School. We lived just across the road from The Junction pub. Who can forget the tin bath, the ...see more
My mum and dad married in September 1950. They had their reception at Pauldens. The week after, they were back, at the funeral of my dad's dad who passed away the day after the wedding. My mum said Pauldens burnt down just after these two events so must have been late September or eary October 1950.
I was born at 58 Bland St in my grandparent's house.. parents were George Johnson and Winifred Ravenscroft. Grandparents, James and Jane Ravenscroft. Grandad was a green grocer and had a horse and cart. We migrated to Aus in 1956.
I too remember going to Duke Street School which later became Gaythorn (named after the gasworks I think). My name then was Mulvanny. Mr Beasley used to make us stand on our seats until we got the answers right. Mr Davies was a dab hand at throwing the board rubber! Always on target. Mrs Holmes was formidable and took no nonsense. Mr Jacks often had a boy or two awaiting their fate (the ...see more
I was born in Coleman Street, Ardwick, in December 1939, just as war broke out. I went to St Aloysius school. I have a book full of photos, memories of St Aloysuis etc. and I still remember every street in Ardwick, all the lovely homely, friendly people. You can take the girl out of Ardwick. but you cannot take Ardwick out of the girl. Mrs Pauline Wild nee MAYOH
Hi, my dad, Brian Birchall was brought up in Hulme. He lived on Elvington Street with his mam, Louisa Birchall, dad Robert Birchall, younger brother Joe Birchall (late) and older brother Athony/Tony Birchall whom unfortunately died in world war 2. Brian and Joe both went to Duke Street School and then City Road School. I'm just wondering if anybody knew my dad's family?
