My Great Grandfather Thomas McAusland from Edinburgh, a printer compositor, came to live in Boston Street, Hyde around 1900 and stayed for about 5 years before returning to Edinburgh. Does anyone know if the houses in Boston Street date back to 1900 or has the street been rebuilt. Also would there have been printing works in Hyde, or would he have had to travel into the likes of Manchester for work? Grateful for any reminiscences.
I remember going to the Astoria when I was 16(1967) I used to say I was 18, I suppose it was a dance hall, I remember there was a balcony where you could go and I remember that there used to be a man downstairs at the entrance, I think he was called Ron. I was born in milk street Hyde in the 40's went to Greenfield Street Juniors then onto Leigh street Secondary, I so remember Hetts sweet shop the ABC minors at the Stannies, the market, woolworths, the house that jack built, the May queen and whit walks when we all got dressed up, even with little money, we looked our best, I remember tide marks, round the neck and down the arms due to smogs etc, we didn't get ...see more
Does anyone remember Cheethams hat works that later became Automaster? Do you know anyone who worked there?
