Kettering, High Street c.1955

More about this scene
There is hardly more traffic in 1955 than in 1922; townspeople, however grand, still cycled or walked to work. There was a joke - especially appreciated in a boot and shoe town - that one cycled to save shoe leather. Lloyds Bank had succeeded the Northamptonshire Banking Company, which had opened in 1876 in temporary offices in the Market Place. In 1890 they joined forces with the Capital and Counties Bank.
