More about this scene

A Norman castle had been built here by Baron Serlo de Burg, but the ruins date from the 14th century. During the reign of King John, the castle was a royal arsenal, manufacturing 109,000 crossbow quarrels. In the early years of Edward II's reign, Knaresborough was extensively rebuilt owing to the lordship having been given to the king's favourite, Piers Gaveston. It was also here that Richard II was imprisoned, prior to being taken to Pontefract where he was murdered.

A Selection of Memories from Knaresborough

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Knaresborough

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at Ye Olde Feathers Hotel, sadly no longer there. It will always have a special place in my heart.
I am seeking Jean Diane Burgoyne born on 5th September 1962 in Catterick, North Yorkshire - adopted in Knaresborough.
