Jogging The Memory

A Memory of Lamberhurst.

Have only just read Mike Beeches memories( where have I been?) My Great Grandfather Stephen Russell lived in the village at Park Gate Cottages, although he was more likely to found in the Horse & Groom! He died in 1968. My mother was born there, and never knew her her father was - just a few days ago having taken an Ancestry DNA test, I now know - unfortunately she died in 2007 and will never know.
My father worked for Avards in the late 1960's as a coach driver, taxi driver and anything else that involved a steering wheel! I was often taken to Freddy Ashdowns for a haircut, according to my mother, long hair took too long to deal with, so this small girl had to have a DA! I well remember all the other shops mentioned in the article. Mr Gurr the butcher used to deliver to my Grandmother in Kilndown once a week.
In the 1970's there was a National Westminster bank, next to the bakers, it seemed to be in someones front room!
Forays into my Family Tree ( on many branches) have led to the discovery that a great aunts husband, who was a Doctor,Theodore Radford Forrester Thomson, had a house built in the village in the 1930's, he named it Corstorphine - this became Spray Hill - home and surgery of Dr Woods - he of the horrible medicine as mentioned by Mike Beech.
