Turpins The Bakers
A Memory of Lewisham.
I'm have somewhat distant relationship with Lee Green: My grandparents owned a greengrocers in Weardale Road and I was told that there were soirees at the Turpins where Fred Turpin used to play the piano ..... a lot of Chopin I believe. My grandparents owned a concert grand and were amateur players with a lesser skill-set and they often attended these little concerts. It was there where my mother (the daughter of my grandparents) met my father who was the nephew of a friend of Fred's (I've an idea they were both employed at the London
Electricity Board). Anyway, whilst listening to some Chopin (in Canada) I had a notion to google "Turpin bakers Lewisham" and found your website.
We lived in north London from 1943/4ish (I was born in 1940, so my memories of those dates were a bit vague) and we had previously lived in Lee, but were bombed out in 1940. We frequently visited Weardale Road and I remember vividly the racket the trams used to make as they trundled down Lee High Road.
Anyway I just wondered if anyone might be able to tell me more about Fred Turpin.
