More about this scene
The transepts on the left were built for the energetic and inspirational bishop, St Hugh of Avalon, after the disastrous 1185 earthquake. He died in 1200 before the east end was finished, and the nave was not completed until the 1130s. St Hugh was canonised in 1220, and the east end was rebuilt by 1280 as the glorious Angel Choir to contain his relics.
