More about this scene

This well, with its thirteen water jets, is a reconstruction of an earlier one destroyed by Oliver Cromwell's troops. All is peace and quiet in this scene, but things were livelier on 23 January 1570. Lord James Stewart, Earl of Moray and Regent, was shot by James Hamilton as he rode through the town. The assassin fired his musket from an upper window in a house belonging to the archbishop of St Andrews, who also appears to have supplied the getaway horse. The Archbishop was executed at Stirling in 1571 without the formality of a trial.

On my only return visit, was devastated to find those houses gone, taking precious memories with them. I remember Tyndall McClellands, the swing ...see more
