I have many memories of lydd some not so great I was brought up in the old police station opp the rising sun just on the right as you go over the bridge of the miniature steam railway. I remember the feilds at the back of the old police station spent most of my childhood across the dykes n feilds picking mushrooms by the railway there was also a caravan site does anyone know about the old police station n what happened ...see more
In March 1954 a lovely spring day saw two new members of the Camp staff arriving at Lydd Station. Craftsman Pankhurst and Craftsman Francis. Stepping out of the train was like stepping onto a silent world. I was tour-ex from RAF Butzweilerhof (Cologne) in September 1961 and didn't fancy a sea crossing so I booked my passage on the air ferry. Everything went smoothly and quickly once I got to Ostend but the overnight trip from Cologne is a different story. I had learned to drive in Germany and hadn't been in the UK for 2 1/2 years. I was a National Service Concript , January 1947 . ( Coldest Winter for years ) . I was posted to Lydd camp with the 30th Light Ack Ack , Regiment Royal Artillery . 18yrs of age . When I saw Romney Marsh on the Postings Board . I was quite scared . I had just seen the Film Great Expectations , with the swirling Mist , and the Graveyard scene in whch Pip meets the Convict .
